Screen doors are usually used during warmer months to maintain good indoor air circulation when the heatwave is at its peak and to prevent an abundant number of bugs from going inside your household.
3 Main Types of Screen Doors
These screen doors can be classified into three based on their functionality.
- Hinged Screen Doors
This is the most common type of screen door that is used in almost all households particularly in the kitchen area or in the main entranceas a secondary door. It is typically cheapercompared to other types because the center of the door frame is just covered witha screen instead of a solid material. This screen door type is usually installed with a dampener to prevent slamming during windy season.
- Retractable Screen Doors
These are the latest innovated type of screen doors wherein its retractability is governed by a powerful magnet embedded on the screen door’s middle seam made of fabric which makes it a pet- and kid-friendly screen door. Among the three types of screen doors, this one is the easiest to install singlehandedly since it is designed for that. For this reason, it has an assembly kit that consists of metal thumbtacks and a large roll of hooks to suit any type of door frame may it be metal or wood.
- Sliding Screen Doors
Sliding screen doors are just like the hinged type theonly difference is that it has screens instead of a glass panel.
Due to the use of multilayers of mesh, the dirt, dust, and tiny bugs naturally adhere to the surface of the screen doors specifically to its holes. If it is not cleaned and maintained often, then the accumulated dirt and bugs will consequently dampen its airflow and blind its holes. Hence, the quality and the filtration capacity of the screen doors are reduced.
Screen Door Caring Tips
Every type of screen door has its maintenance guidelines. Below are some tips for maintaining your screen door’s quality.
For hinged and sliding screen doors, it is better to detach them first from the door jamb before cleaning them with water using a hose. Take note: do not use pressurized waterbecause it will damage the holes, edges, and its special coating which repels bugs and dust from adhering. Then, wash the screen with warm soapy water and rinse it again with unpressurized water. Next, tap it with a dry soft cloth to remove the excess water. Lastly, allow it to dry in the air at ambient temperature. Do not use an air blower because it will destroy the metal or fiber threads due to the temperature gradient. If you are someone living by the beach, using a special coating for your metal screen doors will hinder corrosion and help preserves its service life.
For retractable screen doors, the same maintenance is applied. But it is better to keep it in its housing if the weather is windy.
